![]() I watched until episode 8 last year, and it took me a while to get back to it because of how it made me feel. Sorry the characters made decisions you didn’t like. The point of this show is to explore sexual assault and its impact on people (victims, those close to victims) in a way that’s challenging and uncomfortable. ![]() That shouldn’t be a strike against her or her decision making skills. I think the point of that storyline was to demonstrate that sexual assault happens in all contexts, by people we trust and know, and arabella put her trust in someone who betrayed that. Arabella’s subsequent decisions around sex are those of someone who had just experienced major trauma, and she in all likelihood felt safe in the situation where zain raped her by deception - she was sober, in her own home, it was daylight (from what I remember), so it was remarkably different from the circumstances she was in when she was first drugged and assaulted. I also don’t think in the context of this show, and its messages about sexual assault and interpersonal relationships, that it’s a good idea to make comments about how arabella’s rape could have been prevented - only the rapist had the choice to prevent the rape. And you see Arabella gaining knowledge of that and then deciding to forgive her. She never could have predicted that would happen to Arabella and i think the show makes it very clear that she is extremely guilty over it, and that Arabella is extremely important to her. I think the show does a good job of a.) exploring Terry’s guilt about leaving Arabella/the conversation she had with Simon. This show was just one big mess after another. Arabella was literally snorting coke off of public restroom toilets for christ sake. I don’t think there was a single character in the show that made a single good decision. Why was Terry constantly abandoning her? What kind of person leaves their intoxicated best friend alone in a bar in a foreign country? Why did Terry tell Simon to leave her behind at Ego Death and then tell him to lie about it and then push him out of Bella’s life? Why did Kwame continue to meet up with strange men from the internet after his rape experience? Why did Bella join Theo’s support group even though she knows that Theo had made false rape claims in the past? Why was Bella so obsessed with Biagio even though it was clear he didn’t really care for her? I have so many other questions. The entire show relies on everyone making terrible decisions. But rather than focusing on Bella’s struggles to cope with her trauma, I was far more distracted by her messy friends, family, and bat shit crazy behaviors. ![]() ![]() I had read so many reviews about it and heard that the show was inspiring and a masterpiece. While I can admit that the show was entertaining, I was pretty disappointed with the show. It took me a while to get around to watching it. Today I watched I May Destroy You from start to finish. ![]()
